Hands-free driving law now in effect
Ontario's ban on the use of hand-held communication and entertainment devices while driving is now in effect.
The new law will make it illegal for drivers to text, type, dial or email using hand-held devices while operating a vehicle. Police say if the device is in your hand but not in use, you will still be fined.
There are some exceptions to the new law. Emergency vehicles are exempt and truck drivers will still be allowed to use two-way radios.
The ban is sending many motorists to the closest electronics store to purchase a hands-free device. Retailers are seeing an explosion in hands-free accessories for mobile devices and some are struggling to keep the shelves stocked.
If you are caught, set fines have not yet been set by law enforcement. Until next February, police say they will give out mostly warnings, but can lay the charges with a maximum fine of $500.
