Carey began reporting for Global Toronto in April 2009, but she was no stranger to the Global news room, her first stint at the station was as an intern working alongside Reporter, Sean O’Shea before becoming an Editorial Assistant. Carey then went on to work in Regina, Saskatchewan and Ontario as a Radio and TV Reporter, Video Journalist and fill-in Anchor for the CBC.

Carey was born in Toronto, but raised in Alderville First Nation and is strongly connected to her Ojibway heritage. Bit by the journalism “bug” for as long as she can remember, Carey has fond memories of her father setting up a mock newsroom in their basement where she and her sister would host their own newscasts. Carey went on to more “formal training” at Carleton University, First Nations Technical Institute and Centennial College.

Some of the notable stories Carey has covered include: the search for convicted pedophile, Peter Whitmore after the abduction of a Saskatchewan boy led to a ten-hour standoff in an abandoned farmhouse, the aggravated sexual assault trial against Saskatchewan Roughrider, Trevis Smith, the Queen’s visit to Saskatchewan, and the ailing auto industry and the perseverance of auto workers in Windsor.

Carey is very involved with Turtle Concepts, an organization that promotes self-esteem and self-identity among aboriginal youth. She is also a fancy shawl pow wow dancer, and enjoys exploring the outdoors, camping and canoeing with her husband, Sydney and dog, George. Come hockey season, you will find Carey cheering loudly for her favourite team, the Toronto Maple Leafs.
