ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - A tentative deal has been reached to avert a shut down that would have shut down the St. Lawrence Seaway at noon today.
About 475 members of the Canadian Auto Workers union served 72-hour strike notice Friday, but the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corp. has negotiated a deal to with the union early this morning.
Details of the deal are not yet public.
Union the union has been in negotiations on three collective agreements since May.
The Seaway allows large freight ships to travel between the Atlantic Ocean and the five Great Lakes.
It serves some of the most important industrial cities in Canada and the U.S. and provides a route for the export of grain and other commodities.
