TORONTO – GO Transit has voted in favour of increasing fares for the majority of it’s routes.
The board of directors at Metrolink met on Monday to vote on, what is being called a necessary fare hike, that would take effect in mid-February. "A fare increase this
year is necessary to ensure that GO Transit can continue to provide good
customer service, expand services and manage increased costs in areas like fuel
and hydro." said
Bruce McCuaig, President and CEO, Metrolinx.
The increases, which will take effect on February 18, are as follows:
- For fares that currently cost between $4.20 and $5.50, the increase would be $0.30.
- For fares that currently cost between $5.51 and $7.00, the increase would be $0.35.
- For all fares that currently cost more than $7.00, the increase would be $0.40.
According to a report by Metrolinx, “the fare increase will provide approximately $1.6M per month starting in March 2012,” and roughly $19.5 million annually.
The last fare increase was in March 2010 when all fares went up 25 cents.
