No return to bargaining as York Region Transit strike continues

MARKHAM, Ont. - York Region buses remained idle Wednesday, the third day of a strike by workers at York Region Transit and Viva.

And there has been no word from the unions or the private contractors who run the buses on a return to the bargaining table.

The strike has idled about 60 per cent of the transit system in York, mainly in Markham, Richmond Hill, Newmarket and Aurora.

About 560 drivers and mechanics with York Region Transit and Viva remain off the job, affecting more than 44,000 passengers daily.

Union leader Bob Kinnear has said wages are the sticking point.

The region's previous strike in 2008 lasted two weeks, and was resolved when Viva drivers ended up accepting the same contract which sent them to the picket line in the first place.
