TORONTO – The Toronto Wildlife Centre – the only of its kind in Toronto – is set preparing for emergency after being told by it’s landlord it’s building is scheduled to be demolished.

Running entirely on donations, The Toronto Wildlife Centre, the only shelter for sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife in the city, is appealing to the larger community to help find a new building for the organization and according to a release sent out by the charity, they were not prepared for this emergency. “This news was such a shock,” said Nathalie Karvonen, the executive director of TWC. “We have no extra funds to handle an emergency of this size. If we close down, even for a short time, there is no other wildlife centre in the Greater Toronto Area to help the tens of thousands of people who call our hotline, and the 5,000 wild animals that we care for each year.”

The TWC will be faced with the tough problem of finding enough building space and unoccupied land to fit their needs. According to the TWC, they require “ip to 20,000 square feet of indoor space is needed and 15 to 20 acres of land.”

The Toronto Wildlife Centre is the busiest of it’s kind in Canada, working with over 270 species, in 30,000 calls and admitting up to 5,000 patients each year.
